Science Literacy Week 2019: Creating a book display and a video

Every year libraries, museums, schools and other institutions across Canada "showcases the diversity of Canadian science and the culture it's embedded in" with Science Literacy Week.

Designing videos can be a huge part of a librarian's workload, and UBC iSchool certainly prepares us for that.

One of the individual assignments for the Services for Children course (LIBR 527) was to create a book trailer, and the group assignment for Instructional Role of the Librarian course (LIBR 535) was to design a tutorial video. Given that the videos I designed were either too short or developed with a team, I thought that designing a video for my co-op's first term capstone assignment would be a nice challenge.

Science Literacy Week 2020 theme was Ocean and all UBC Library branches had Ocean related book displays. I selected books for the Biomedical Branch and designed a book display for the Memorial Room, a beautiful, cozy room at Woodward Library. It was the first time I curated a book display, and, although it seemed like a not-so-stressful experience, there's a lot to take under consideration. I decided to create my video on that book display, and it was a great learning experience: I designed a script, chose pictures, a song, recorded my voice, edited the video and uploaded it to YouTube.

Science Literacy Week had lots of students engaged and participating in the activities proposed by the library: a successful event.
