Textbook, e-book and print book: Creating a Glossary of Library – related terms

As an international student, I found myself struggling with some scholarly terms right after starting my MLIS. When teaching a library skills session to a group of North-Korean Scholars, I noticed that many library terms were completely new for them, and saw an opportunity.

"How can I get a textbook?" - I struggled to answer that question, there are so many textbooks! However, when I noticed that the patron meant print book, it became clear that something was missing.

The first time I heard the term assignment, I panicked. So, I understand how hard it can be to study in a different country and culture. Thus, I asked to my supervisor if there was anything we could do to better support international students at Woodward Library. She told me to look up for literature and bring the matter to the Transformational Learning Working Group.

Knowing that UBC is an Institution that makes decisions based on evidence, I read several articles on how academic libraries support international students in North America. Based on that, I pitched the working group about a glossary of library terms. The idea was welcomed, and one of the librarians mentioned that she had previously worked on a Glossary and would be happy to share it with us.

After about a month of adding, editing and crowdsourcing, we had an extensive Glossary, which was approved by all librarians in the group and shared with all Woodward librarians. Each of us then tailored our glossaries according to the sessions we would teach and shared it with students.

After the end of my Co-Op terms, I participated of a networking session at the Annual iSchool Co-Op Conference and mentioned the Glossary to a SFU Librarian. Later that week, I heard from one of my supervisors that the SFU librarian asked her for the Glossary. I was glad to see that our idea was welcomed by many students and Faculty.

As it might be useful for other Institutions, we designed it using a CC BY 4.0, as you can see - and use!
